This is an album compiling the autograph farewell poems of thirty-three people, presented to Jo Jung-hoe (1711-1782), a civil official of the late Joseon period, when he departed on a diplomatic journey to Qing China in 1751, the twenty-seventh year of King Yeongjo, as the documenting secretary of a mission combining a mission of thanks with the winter solstice greetings mission. The Album of Farewell Poems measures 47 by 50 cm, and excluding the cover, the main text comprises thirty-four leaves. At the upper right of the cover is an inscription in ink recording that it was a farewell gift for Jo Jung-hoe, documenting secretary of the mission of thanks and winter solstice greetings, in the sinmi year, the twenty-seventh year of King Yeongjo; to the left is written the title, the Album of Farewell Poems. The title of each poem, such as 'Farewell Gift,' 'Respectfully Seeing Off,' 'Seeing Off Jo,' or 'Farewell to Jo Ikjang,' identifies it as a farewell poem. At the foot of each poem is recorded the date of its composition — for example, '1751, sinmi year, the first day of the eleventh lunar month, Gunbeom Yi Gi-jin,' '1751, sinmi year, the tenth lunar month, Dongho Won Gyeong-ha,' and '1751, sinmi year, the sixth day of the eleventh lunar month, Sunbo Hong Gye-hui.' Since the dates differ from poem to poem, it is presumed that the poems were not composed together at a single farewell gathering, but that each guest either wrote his poem before attending the farewell banquet, or sent it separately before Jo Jung-hoe set out on his journey. This album is a valuable source for understanding the practice of exchanging farewell poems on the occasion of diplomatic missions in the late Joseon period, and for tracing the social network of Jo Jung-hoe, the album's owner.
