Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the former residence of Kim Jeong-hui (pen name Chusa, 1786-1856), a leading Silhak, or Practical Learning, scholar and calligrapher of the late Joseon period. The house, made up of two buildings, an anchae (women's quarters) and a sarangchae (men's quarters), is said to have been built by Kim Han-sin, a son-in-law of King Yeongjo of Joseon (r. 1724-1776) and great-grandfather of Kim Jeong-hui. The whole complex is laid out on a long east-west axis: the anchae stands to the west, and the sarangchae, set lower than the anchae, stands separately to the east. The sarangchae was the living space where the male head of the household stayed and received guests; it is L-shaped in plan and faces south. Each room has a toenmaru, a narrow wooden veranda, along its front, which served as a passageway. The anchae is arranged in a closed, box-shaped plan enclosed on all four sides around a central courtyard. Since the anchae was where household life took place, a wooden panel wall was set up just inside the entrance so that the interior could not be seen at a glance. Unlike other historic houses, its daecheong, a wooden-floored central hall, faces east, and the main bedroom and its associated spaces occupy the northern side. The roof is a hipped-and-gabled paljak roof, whose side takes the shape of the Chinese character 八 (eight); where changes in ground level occur, the roof steps down using a simple gable form shaped like the character 人 (person).
