송담서원 · 松潭書院

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is where the spirit tablet of Yulgok Yi I is enshrined and memorial rites are performed. In 1630, the eighth year of King Injo of Joseon, Seokcheonseowon Confucian Academy was first built at Haksan-ri to commemorate Yi I's scholarship and virtuous conduct, and his spirit tablet was enshrined there. The academy was moved to its present location in 1652, the third year of King Hyojong, and in 1660, the first year of King Hyeonjong, it received from the king a name plaque inscribed 'Songdam'; since then it has held rites for former sages and provided education to the local community. In 1756, the thirty-second year of King Yeongjo, a stele was erected in the academy's courtyard recording its history and Yi I's achievements. In 1868, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong, the academy was abolished under the Regent Heungseon Daewongun's order closing seowon academies nationwide, but it was rebuilt in 1904 with funds raised by local dignitaries. Within the academy stand Songdamsa Shrine, which houses the spirit tablet; Sesimjae, two three-bay study halls flanking Songdamsa on either side; a middle gate; a stele pavilion; and an outer gate. Both buildings of Sesimjae each consist of one room with a toenmaru, a narrow veranda, at the front, and were used as venues for the academy's events, for fostering harmony, and for scholarly discussion. Rites are held every year on the second jeong-day of the second lunar month, a date traditionally chosen for Confucian memorial ceremonies.
