Standing Jidang-ri Stone Buddha
지당리석불입상 · 池塘里石佛立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Buddha statue is carved from a single stone, combining the halo, body and pedestal, with the area below the feet buried underground. Its present height is 3.63 metres, but taking the buried portion into account, it is presumed to have originally been a large statue over 4 metres tall. Above the bare head rises a tall topknot-shaped hair bun, and the ears hang down long to the shoulders. The robe, which covers both shoulders, falls in symmetrical curving folds. The shoulders are broad at 1.15 metres, and the sleeve folds draping over both arms are also rendered extending down to the feet. The halo, which represents the light radiating from the Buddha's body, shows only a head halo, which is considerably large at 1.82 metres in diameter. Inside the head halo a lotus pattern is carved, and around its edge a raised circular line is carved. Because the detailed decoration, such as the lotus pattern on the head halo, has become simplified and has lost its former delicacy, the work is presumed to date from the late Goryeo period, later than the standing stone Buddha at Manboksa Temple Site, a treasure.
