Seated Anjeongsa Temple Stone Buddha
안정사석조여래좌상 · 安定寺石造如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis statue was found in Mijil-dong, Andong, North Gyeongsang Province. It originally stood at Anjeongsa Temple, but after the temple was lost to the construction of Andong Dam, it was moved to and is now kept at the nearby Bongjeongsa Temple. It is coated with gold powder, which can lead it to be mistaken for a gilt-bronze Buddha, but it is in fact a stone statue. The head bears a topknot-shaped bun, and the face is rather round. The robe is draped over both shoulders, and a butterfly-ribbon-shaped knot depicted at the chest is a striking feature. The right hand rests on the knee with the fingers pointing downward, a gesture symbolising the subjugation of demons of the earth. The pedestal on which the Buddha sits is semicircular and carved with a lotus pattern.
