Sin Jap Portrait
신잡 초상 · 申磼 肖像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a portrait of Sin Jap, a civil official of the mid-Joseon period. Sin Jap (1541–1609) served as Vice Minister of the Ministry of Personnel and Vice Minister of the Ministry of Punishments, and was enfeoffed as a Hoseong Merit Subject, a title granted to officials who escorted King Seonjo to Uiju during the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592–1598), in recognition of his service. The painting, executed on silk, measures 90 cm in width and 167 cm in height. It shows the sitter full-length, seated in a chair, his gaze turned to the right and his two hands clasped together inside his sleeves. He wears a samo (an official's black gauze cap) and the court robe worn on important ceremonial occasions, with a rank badge embroidered with two cranes on the chest. Painted by Kim I-seop, the portrait shows Sin Jap at the age of 57, in the 40th year of King Seonjo (1607), and gives a good sense of the painting style of the mid-Joseon period.
