Standing Jeongseo-ri Stone Buddha
정서리석조여래입상 · 亭西里石彫如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a Buddha image with its body and halo carved from a single stone; apart from the loss of both hands, its original form survives almost intact. Above the bare head rises a tall, topknot-shaped bun of hair, and the long, narrow eyes and small lips show features characteristic of the Goryeo period. The robe draped over both shoulders is rendered in a rounded, dignified form, but the drapery folds, arranged in strict bilateral symmetry, have become considerably stylised. The halo is a semicircle with rounded ends, its head-halo and body-halo distinguished only by a raised line, with no further decoration. The pedestal is semicircular, comprising an upper tier carved with lotus flowers and a square lower tier partly buried in the ground. The well-balanced rendering of the body and the elegant, supple sense of volume reflect Silla characteristics, combined here with stylised elements typical of Goryeo.
