Uiyeolsa Stele
의열사비 · 義烈祠碑

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stele records the process by which Uiyeolsa Shrine was built and the figures enshrined within it. Uiyeolsa was founded in 1575, the eighth year of King Seonjo of Joseon, by Hong Ga-sin, the magistrate of Buyeo, and in 1577, the tenth year of King Seonjo, the king himself named it and bestowed a name-plaque. The stele consists of a stone body set on a square base and capped with a roof-shaped stone. According to the inscription, Hong Ga-sin was troubled that the achievements of three loyal Baekje ministers native to this region — Seongchung, Heungsu and Gyebaek — and of Yi Jon-o, who had withdrawn from office in the Goryeo period after impeaching Sindon, were not being handed down to later generations, and so he built a shrine to honour them. The inscription also records that Jeong Taek-roe and Hwang Il-ho of the Joseon period were later enshrined there as well. The stele was erected in 1723, the third year of King Gyeongjong, and originally stood on Mangwolsan Mountain in Yongjeong-ri, Buyeo-gun; in 1971 it was moved, together with the shrine, to its present location.
