Seated Yonghwasayaksa Temple Buddha
용화사약사여래좌상 · 龍華寺藥師如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Buddha image stands in a small hermitage built by a private individual, in a valley on a hillside in Jangheung, Jeollanam-do. It is a seated stone Buddha carved from a single block of granite, the figure and its halo cut from one and the same stone. Atop the head is a clearly defined topknot-shaped hair bun, and the slender face with finely rendered features conveys both refinement and the dignity of a Buddha. The body is naturally modelled on the human form, closely following the sculptural style of the late Unified Silla period. The robe covers both shoulders, its folds rendered in a somewhat schematic manner. The right hand is raised to shoulder height with the palm turned outward, and the left hand rests on the knee in the pose of holding a medicine jar, though the jar itself is now lost. The edges of the halo are broken, so its original form cannot be clearly made out, but it retains a round head halo finely carved with lotus, floral and flame motifs. The carving technique of the face and the schematic treatment of the drapery folds show features transitional towards the more formalised Buddhist sculpture of the Goryeo period.
