Gamni Standing Rock-carved Buddha, Changnyeong
창녕 감리 마애여래입상 · 昌寧 甘里 磨崖如來立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis work, located in Changnyeong, Gyeongsangnam-do, is carved in relief on a natural granite rock face. Heavy weathering has obscured much of the detail, but the skilful carving can still be seen in the full, rounded face, the ears reaching down to the shoulders, and the three creases around the neck. The robe covers the left shoulder, with U-shaped drapery folds running from the chest to the knees. The halo behind the body, which represents the light radiating from the Buddha, is shaped like a boat, while the halo behind the head is rendered as two concentric circular lines. The full face, the modelling of the body's contours and the soft drapery folds suggest that this Buddha image was made during the Unified Silla period.
