Seated Wooden Avalokitesvara of Naewonjeongsa Temple
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

An ink inscription found inside the statue gives its date of production as 1730, the sixth year of King Yeongjo of Joseon, making it a benchmark work for Buddhist statues of the same period. The somewhat stiff profile of the body, the head bowed slightly forward, and the treatment of the hem of the skirt-like lower garment all reflect the style of the late Joseon period. Overall, the work stands out for its stable, well-balanced body, the flowing softness of its drapery, and its gentle expression. It is particularly unusual in taking the pose of yunwangjwa, the wheel-turning king's seat, seated with one knee raised. Made by Uigyeom, the foremost monk-painter of his day, this bodhisattva image is highly valued both for its clearly known date of production and because seated wooden images of Avalokitesvara of this kind survive only in small numbers.
