Gyeseong School Haendeoseungwan Hall

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krHaendeoseungwan Hall was built in 1931 by Henderson, the fourth principal of Gyeseong School, using funds raised in the United States by the missionary Blair. Henderson himself designed the building; under his supervision the students carried out the foundation work, while Chinese bricklayers and Japanese carpenters handled the upper structure. Originally a two-storey building of red brick, it was extended to three storeys in 1964, when reinforced-concrete columns were set inside the building and the floors were rebuilt as concrete slabs. Haendeoseungwan Hall is a Gothic-style school building with a Renaissance air about it, and it has kept its original form comparatively well to this day. Beyond its historical significance, it holds important value as a source for the study of architectural history, allowing insight into the process by which Western architecture was introduced to Korea and into the techniques used in composing its exterior.
