This statue stands on a hillside in Namwon, Jeonbuk State, believed to be the site of a temple in Nakdong-ri. Its legs below the knees had long been buried and were only recently excavated. Measured from the base of the pedestal to the top of the halo, the statue is 2.4 metres tall. Atop the bald head is a large topknot-shaped bun of hair, and although the face is too worn to make out clearly, it gives a gentle, benign impression. The robe draped over both shoulders falls in parallel folds down to the knees at the front, and the drapery hanging over both arms extends far down along either side of the legs. The left hand is raised to chest height, and the right is bent in front of the abdomen, though the shape of the fingers is difficult to make out. The halo, representing the light radiating from the Buddha's body, is boat-shaped and carved with a floral pattern at its centre. Both the head halo and the body halo are rendered in double outline, with floral patterns carved on the inner band and flame patterns on the outer. Given its similarity in technique to the Standing Stone Buddha at the Manboksa Temple Site, Namwon (a treasure), this statue is presumed to be a work of the early Goryeo period.
