Cheongnyangsa Temple, located on Cheongnyangsan Mountain, was built in 663, the third year of King Munmu of Silla, by the Venerable Wonhyo. On Cheongnyangsan Mountain there were 26 hermitages of various sizes centred on a temple called Yeondaesa Temple, making the mountain a cradle of Silla Buddhism at the time. Yuribojeon Hall enshrines the Medicine Buddha and is also known as Yaksajeon Hall. It was built low to the ground on one side of a valley where the wind always blows hard, and because the ground in front of the hall drops away in a cliff, the courtyard is rather narrow. It measures three kan across the front and two kan along the side, and has a hip-and-gable roof (paljak roof) whose side profile resembles the Chinese character for "eight" (八). The placing of auxiliary pillars beneath the building's main beam to support the wall behind the Buddha altar is a feature rarely seen elsewhere, and it is regarded as an important characteristic of the hall.
