Seated Stone Buddha in Oryang-ri, Geoje
거제 오량리 석조여래좌상 · 巨濟 烏良里 石造如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis statue was discovered around 1950 on the hill in front of Seokburam Hermitage, in Jeolgol, Oryang-ri. It is unusual for a Buddhist statue this large to have come from Geojedo Island, and tradition holds that it was made in 1170, when King Uijong of Goryeo, after being deposed, built Pyewangseong (the "Deposed King's Fortress") on Geojedo Island and stayed there for three years. The shoulders are broadly rendered, but the lower body is disproportionately small, giving the figure a somewhat unstable appearance. The robe, worn baring the right shoulder, is relatively thin and shows tightly gathered folds. The right hand rests over the knee with the fingers pointing downward, in the earth-touching gesture (hangma chokjiin), identifying the figure as Sakyamuni Buddha. Of the pedestal on which the statue sits, only the cone-shaped upper and lower sections, carved with lotus patterns, survive. The somewhat perfunctory carving of the lower body and the formulaic treatment of the drapery folds suggest that the statue was made during the Goryeo period.
