Gongju Dongwon-ri Stone Pagoda
공주동원리석탑 · 公州東院里石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a three-storey stone pagoda standing in a field above the village of Dongwon-ri. Surrounded by mountains on three sides, the area around the pagoda has only scattered roof-tile fragments, with no other relics. The pagoda has a three-storey body set on a two-tier base, though the third-storey body stone is now missing. Pillar shapes are carved onto both tiers of the base and onto the body stones. The corners of the roof stones curve up slightly, and their undersides each carry four tiers of supporting brackets. Overall, the pillar carvings on the base and body stones are finely worked, but the second-storey body stone narrows abruptly compared with the first, throwing the pagoda off balance, and the loss of the third-storey body stone leaves something to be desired. During dismantling and restoration in 1962, a small pagoda made of steatite and a stone carved in the shape of an animal were discovered and are now kept at the Gongju National Museum. According to legend, in the middle of the Goryeo period the magistrate of Sinpung-hyeon judged that, by the principles of feng shui, the open ground behind this village was shortening the county's fortunes and causing frequent illness among its people; to drive out all this misfortune, the magistrate and the villagers together erected this pagoda.
