Standing Rock-carved Buddha in Gasan-ri, Yangsan
양산 가산리 마애여래입상 · 架山里磨崖如來立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a huge Buddha image, 12 m in height, carved on a granite cliff at the summit of Geumjeongsan Mountain, north of Beomeosa Temple. The figure is rendered in thin incised lines and is now badly worn from long exposure to wind and rain. Atop the head is a round, topknot-shaped bun, and the ears hang down long enough to reach the shoulders. The face is square, with narrow, bow-shaped eyes and a large nose that together give it a rustic, folk-like impression. The robe is worn leaving the right shoulder bare, but the area below the chest is so worn that it is difficult to make out in detail. The rustic, regional character of the image, together with its thin, linear carving, suggests that it was made during the Goryeo period.
