Seated Yugasa Temple Stone Buddha
유가사석조여래좌상 · 瑜伽寺石造如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Buddha statue enshrined at Yugasa Temple was made of the same granite for both the figure and the pedestal; although the front of the face and both knees have been repaired with cement, the rest is relatively well preserved in its original form. The head is covered with small snail-shell-shaped curls, and near the crown a high topknot-shaped protuberance rises up. The face is a slender oval, and the three folds on the neck are not clearly marked. The shoulders are angular and firmly set, and the chest juts out with a sense of volume. The robe bares the right shoulder and covers only the left, in the "right shoulder exposed" style, and the upper body is opened at the chest to an extent without precedent. The hands form the earth-touching gesture, with the left hand resting on the right foot, which is set in the auspicious cross-legged posture, and the folds of the robe over the cross-legged legs are finely rendered. In form, this statue can be classed in the same lineage as the principal Buddha of Seokguram Grotto, but it shows changes such as narrower shoulders and less firmness in the chest, and its square pedestal reflects a fashion current from the tenth century onward, providing a clue for estimating the date of this statue.
