Ilbonje18 Bank was completed in 1890 and opened for business in October of that year. It stood at 24 Jungang-dong 2-ga, immediately next to the 58th Bank, and from 1954 the building was used by the Hanguk Heungeop Bank. Ilbonje18 Bank was established with the aim of allowing Japan to dominate Korea's financial sector. That every Japanese bank built at the time shared this same aim of turning Korea's financial world into a colony of Japan is clear enough from the fact that, of the seven banks and thirteen insurance companies then operating, all were Japanese-owned except for Cheonil Bank. After 1954 the building served as a branch of the Hanguk Heungeop Bank, formed that year by the merger of the Sanggong Bank and the Sintak Bank. It was later rented out, serving as a café until 1992 and afterwards as a used-furniture wholesaler.
