Standing Gapsaseokjoyaksa Temple Buddha
갑사석조약사여래입상 · 甲寺石造藥師如來立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe statue stands in a natural cave about 100 metres up the valley to the east of Gapsa Temple, and is said to have originally stood at Sajaam Hermitage on the mountain behind the temple. The topknot-shaped bun of hair on the head is large, and the face is rather long. The robe draped over both shoulders leaves the chest slightly exposed and falls to below the knees. Below the chest, semicircular folds of drapery are carved, and near the left shoulder a single fold passes over the shoulder. The right hand is raised to chest height with the palm turned outward, while the left hand holds a medicine bowl, identifying the figure as the Buddha of Medicine. Judging from its overall composition and carving technique, the statue is presumed to have been made in the mid-Goryeo period.
