Standing Gapsa Temple Stone Bodhisattva

This statue originally stood at Jajaam Hermitage on the mountain behind Gapsa Temple in Gongju, South Chungcheong Province, together with a standing statue of the Medicine Buddha and a stupa of Gapsa Temple; it has since been moved to and is kept at Jinhaedang Hall of Gapsa Temple. The face is badly worn and indistinct, but the nose is prominent and the eyes appear closed. The robe covers both shoulders, with one fold passing over the right wrist and draping toward the back. The drapery over the lower body has soft, thin lines that faithfully render the curves of the body. The right hand, held at chest height, appears to be holding something, though it is not clear what; the left arm hangs down, the hand holding a long-necked bottle at knee level. Overall, with its slender waist and finely rendered shoulders, the carving technique appears refined, and the work is thought to date from the Baekje period.
