This is a jeongnyeogak, a memorial gate erected to honour exemplary loyalty, built to commemorate the outstanding devotion of Park Eon-bae, a righteous army commander at the time of the Jeongmyo War, and his wife, Lady Yi. Park Eon-bae was a member of the local gentry of the Okgwa area and a descendant of Park Yeon. When Qing forces invaded in 1627, the fifth year of King Injo of Joseon, he joined the fighting as a righteous army commander and died in the Battle of Anju. When news of his death became known, his wife, Lady Yi, followed him by taking her own life. Chungnyeolmun Gate was erected in 1805, the fifth year of King Sunjo.
