Munsusa Temple, located halfway up Cheongnyangsan Mountain, was founded in 644, the fourth year of King Uija of Baekje, by the monk Jajang. Having trained on Cheongnyangsan Mountain in Tang China, Jajang happened to be passing through this area when he felt that Chwiryeongsan Mountain resembled that Chinese Cheongnyangsan; he then built a temple here and named it Munsusa. Munsusa Temple's Manjusri Hall was built in 1764, the fortieth year of King Yeongjo of Joseon, when the monk Sinhwa rebuilt the temple, in order to enshrine a statue of Manjusri Bodhisattva that had been discovered at the site. The stone statue of Manjusri Bodhisattva has an unusually large upper body, and is notable for having its pedestal and part of its lower body buried in the ground.
