Buramsa Temple Sutra Woodblocks
불암사경판 · 佛岩寺經板

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese are woodblocks kept at Buramsa Temple in Namyangju, Gyeonggi-do, most of them printed between 1635, the thirteenth year of King Injo of Joseon, and 1795, the nineteenth year of King Jeongjo. Their size varies by type: the larger blocks measure 64 cm by 35.5 cm, and the smaller ones 47 cm by 23 cm. They are made of soft-grained birch wood, with strips of wood fitted into both ends to prevent warping. The woodblocks carry Mahayana sutras, apocryphal sutras, mantra and dharani texts, and other writings concerning the realms in which the Buddha dwells. The calligraphy is vigorous, and the carving of the characters on the blocks is extremely fine, demonstrating the excellence of Joseon-period printing. These woodblocks are important material for understanding the character of Buramsa Temple in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
