This bodhisattva statue is enshrined at Woljeongsa Temple, founded in 643, the 12th year of Queen Seondeok of Silla, by the monk Jajang. It depicts Avalokitesvara, the bodhisattva of compassion who saves sentient beings in the present world. It is known as the Six-armed Avalokitesvara, as it has six hands, three on each shoulder. The tall crown on its head is carved with floral patterns and flame-shaped beads, and a small Buddha is carved on the front. Two braided strands of hair hang down over both shoulders, and a long necklace hung with beaded ornaments is depicted across the exposed chest. Elaborate bracelets are fitted on all six wrists. The slender body has a lower half that appears fuller than the upper body, with wide knees. The folds of the garment covering the knees are rendered in a coarse, formalised manner. The pedestal follows the outline of the statue in an oval shape, carved with a fully bloomed lotus pattern on the upper part and an inverted lotus pattern on the lower part. Although not executed with great technical skill, the six arms are not awkwardly rendered, and overall this is a well-balanced bodhisattva statue of the Joseon period.
