Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis building was erected in memory of Gyeongeun Yi Maeng-jeon (1392-1480), one of the Saengyuksin, the 'Six Surviving Loyal Subjects' who withdrew from public life after King Danjong's overthrow. It was built by royal order in 1786, the 10th year of King Jeongjo's reign. Yi Maeng-jeon, known for his incorruptible reputation, saw the country thrown into turmoil in 1453, the first year of King Danjong, when Grand Prince Suyang ousted Hwangbo In, Kim Jong-seo and other officials who supported the young king and seized power himself; the following year Yi Maeng-jeon resigned his post and returned to his hometown. Pretending to be deaf and blind, he refused to see even his closest friends, and lived for more than thirty years without leaving his gate, passing away at over ninety years of age. The building has a frontage of three kan and a depth of two kan, with a gable roof whose side takes the shape of the character 人 (person).
