Nonsan Sinpung-ri Rock-carved Buddha
논산신풍리마애불 · 論山新豊里磨崖佛

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Sinpung-ri Rock-carved Buddha is a Buddha figure 3.5 m tall, lightly incised in line engraving on the rock face south of the summit of Gojeongsan Mountain in Bujeok-myeon, Nonsan, South Chungcheong Province. Overall, with its large face, long narrow eyes, broad nose and small mouth, it clearly shows the features of provincial Buddhist statue styles of the Goryeo period. The head shows a relatively large usnisha (the topknot-shaped protrusion on a Buddha's head) and nabal (the Buddha's hair, curled tightly like a conch shell), while the shoulders are broad and level, giving an impression of dignity, though a strongly schematic, formalised beauty is also apparent. The robe is worn in the tonggyeon style, covering both shoulders and wrapping across the chest, with V-shaped folds carved on the upper body, the fold lines engraved as evenly spaced, closely set parallel patterns. The mandorla, representing the light radiating from the Buddha's body, is boat-shaped, and near the head three small Buddha figures are carved, decorated with flame patterns rendered in fine lines. Overall, the statue reflects both the period characteristics of Goryeo Buddhist sculpture and a provincial style, giving it significance in the history of art.
