Monghangak Pavilion, Damyang
담양 몽한각 · 潭陽夢漢閣

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pavilion was built in 1803, the third year of King Sunjo's reign, by Yi Dong-ya, magistrate of Damyang, and Yi Hun-hwi, magistrate of Changpyeong, to honour Yi Seo (1482-?), a fifth-generation descendant of King Taejong of Joseon (r. 1400-1418). Yi Seo was exiled to Changpyeong in 1507, the second year of King Jungjong, on charges of plotting rebellion. Released fifteen years later, he did not return to Hanyang but devoted himself, in the valleys of Damyang, to compiling books and teaching his descendants and disciples. Monghangak is a building used for ancestral rites, with a frontage of five kan and a depth of two kan. It has a hip-and-gable roof, whose side takes the shape of the character 八 (eight).
