Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA gamnotaeng, or nectar ritual painting, depicts scenes drawn from the Ullambana Sutra and is used in rites to guide the souls of the dead to a better rebirth. The composition centres on a memorial rite being performed at a large table laden with offerings of food in the middle of the picture; above, seven Buddhas stand in a row, with the Amitabha Triad depicted on the left and Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva together with the bodhisattva who guides souls to the Pure Land shown on the right. Below the table of offerings, two starving hungry ghosts are depicted, and beneath them are scenes of hell and various aspects of everyday life in this world. The painting was made in 1916, the fifth year of the Taisho era, and its colours are on the whole dull and muted. It measures 166.5 cm wide and 146 cm high.
