Jangheung Sainjeong Pavilion
장흥사인정 · 長興舍人亭

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSainjeong Pavilion is where Seoram Kim Pil (1426–1470) taught his disciples. Having served as Vice Director of the Hongmun-gwan (Office of Special Advisors) and as Second Minister of Personnel under King Danjong (r. 1452–1455), Seoram gave up his official post after the Gyeyu coup of 1453 and withdrew to Jangheung to live in seclusion, where he built a pavilion and devoted himself to teaching younger scholars. When he ended his days there, his descendants, wishing to honour his memory, named the pavilion "Sainjeong," after "sain," the title of the official post he had once held. The building has three bays across the front and two bays along the side, and is topped with a hipped-and-gabled roof shaped, when seen from the side, like the character for "eight." A heated ondol room occupies the centre, surrounded on all sides by a wooden floor.
