Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krYonggyeseowon is a seowon built to commemorate the scholarly virtue and loyalty of Yi Maeng-jeon (1392-1480), who went by the pen name Gyeongeun. Yi Maeng-jeon was one of the Saengyuksin, loyal subjects who kept faith with King Danjong of Joseon (r. 1452-1455) though they lived on rather than dying for their cause; when Grand Prince Suyang coveted the throne of the young King Danjong, Yi abandoned his official post, returned to his hometown, and spent the rest of his life devoted to scholarship. Yonggyeseowon was built in Togok-dong by royal order in 1782, the sixth year of King Jeongjo, but following the order to abolish seowon issued by Heungseon Daewongun in 1868, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong's reign, it was moved to Nohang-dong and used as a village school. In 1976 it was relocated to its present site owing to the construction of Yeongcheon Dam. It is a pavilion-style building topped with a paljak roof, whose sides are shaped like the Chinese character 八.
