This is the only well still preserved within Seoul's four great gates. It is called "eojeong," meaning "royal well," because successive kings of Joseon are said to have drunk from it whenever they came to Jongmyo Shrine. The well is round, about 8 m deep and 1.5 m in diameter, and its interior is lined entirely with a stone wall. The upper part of the well originally consisted of long, square stones assembled in the shape of the character 井 (meaning "well"), with stones then stacked up around that shape. During the Japanese colonial period concrete was applied, altering its appearance, but the original form was restored during repairs carried out in 1985. Judging from the method of stonework and the degree of wear on the stones, the well is presumed to have been built in the early Joseon period.
