Bosalsa Temple was first built in 567, the twenty-eighth year of King Jinheung of Silla, by the monk Uisin, and is the oldest temple with a long history near Cheongju. Geungnakbojeon Hall was built in the early Joseon period, repaired during the reign of King Seonjo (r. 1567–1608), rebuilt in 1683, the ninth year of King Sukjong, and rebuilt again in 1872. It measures three kan (bays) across the front and two kan along the side, a modest building with a gable roof (matbae) whose sides form the shape of the Chinese character 人 (person). The bracket sets (gongpo), which support the eaves while also serving a decorative function, are placed both above the columns and between them, making this a dapo-style building. Inside are enshrined a pair of standing stone Buddha statues, a statue of Jijang Bosal (Kshitigarbha), and a Buddha triad. Geungnakbojeon Hall of Bosalsa Temple is a Buddhist hall that strongly retains the architectural characteristics of the Joseon period.
