Seated Bianmyeonjarak-dong Stone Buddha
비안면자락동석조여래좌상 · 比安面自樂洞石造如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krHalfway up Gulamsan Mountain, there is a natural cave in a rock face that encircles the site like a folding screen, and a Buddha statue is enshrined inside it. The statue sits with both feet drawn up onto the knees, on a square pedestal (daejwa) carved with a lotus pattern, and its body is squarish in overall shape. The head is covered with small, snail-shell-shaped curls, above which a topknot-shaped protuberance is rendered broad and high, making the face appear elongated. The shoulders are narrow, giving a hunched impression, and the robe draped over both shoulders is rendered in a formalised manner. The knees are high and narrow, and the waist is elongated, giving the figure an unstable posture. The shape of the head and the undergarment visible at the chest retain something of an earlier style, but the elongated waist, square pedestal and formalised rendering of the body make it clear that the statue was made in the Goryeo period.
