Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis shrine enshrines the spirit tablet of General Kim Yu-sin (595–673) of Silla. After Silla unified the Three Kingdoms, the Malgal people repeatedly invaded and harassed the border regions; it is said that the general stayed at the foot of Hwabusan Mountain in Myeongju (present-day Gangneung) and drove back the enemy, restoring peace to the area. After the general's death, the people built a shrine at the foot of Hwabusan Mountain in the 21st year of King Gojong of Joseon (1884) and held memorial rites there in his honour; the shrine was later moved to its present location in 1936 when Gangneung Station was expanded. It measures three kan (structural bays) across the front and two kan on the side, with a gable roof whose side takes the shape of the character 人 (person). Within the grounds stands a stele recording the general's life and achievements, titled the 'Record of the Merits of the Loyal and Valiant King Muheung at Hwasan.'
