Daejang illamjip was compiled by the upasaka (lay Buddhist devotee) Chen Shi of Ningde at the very beginning of the Ming dynasty, and printed and circulated by the Yuwu Sanlang bookshop in Jian'an. When this edition reached Korea, it was reprinted sometime between the end of Goryeo and the beginning of Joseon by beon'gak (pasting the original pages face-down onto woodblocks and carving directly from them), and the present copy was struck from that same set of woodblocks. Judging from the slight wear visible in the carved characters on some pages, this particular printing was made somewhat later, in the early Joseon period. What survives is a single incomplete volume combining volumes 7 and 8 of the original ten-volume early-Joseon printing, and it is on the whole in good condition. Daejang illamjip is a dictionary-like compendium that gathers together the various sutras, treatises and biographies of sages contained in the Buddhist canon, organising them broadly into eight categories further subdivided into sixty sections, with relevant excerpts collected under each subject for ease of reference.
