경양사 · 鏡陽祠

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krGyeongyangsa is a shrine dedicated to the memory of Bak Je-sang, a loyal subject of Silla, built in the early 1900s by the Bak clan of Gangneung. At the request of King Nulji, who ascended the throne in 417, Bak Je-sang brought back the king's younger brother Bokho, who was held hostage in Goguryeo, and helped Prince Misahun, who was held captive in Japan, escape to Silla; he himself was then captured, exiled and killed. It is also said that his wife, while waiting for his return, turned into the Mangbuseok (Rock of the Husband-Awaiting Wife). The shrine measures three kan across the front and two kan along the sides, and has a gable roof (matbae) whose side profile forms the shape of the Chinese character 人 (person). Inside, poems personally composed by King Sukjong of Joseon (r. 1674–1720) and King Jeongjo (r. 1776–1800) are preserved, and a memorial rite is held every year on the fifth day of the third lunar month.
