Bronze Incense Burner of Okcheonsa Temple, Goseong
고성 옥천사 청동향로 · 固城 玉泉寺 靑銅香爐

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krAn incense burner is a vessel used in Buddhist temples to burn incense, which is understood to wash away the dust of the mind. This bronze incense burner from the Joseon period is 23 cm high with a mouth diameter of 27.5 cm. Around its mouth is a broad, flat rim, and on its inner surface is an inscription in dotted lines reading 'Uiryeong Sudosa', naming Sudosa Temple in Uiryeong. Around the body of the burner, four flower-shaped openings have been made, each enclosing a phoenix, while the remaining surface is densely covered with a scrolling vine pattern. The base beneath has no decoration and its form is out of balance with the body; it bears an inscription recording that the burner was repaired in 1816, the sixteenth year of King Sunjo of Joseon. Its patterns were made using a technique in which the design is first engraved and then inlaid with silver, showing the same method as the silver-inlay incense burner of Pyochungsa Temple. This is an outstanding piece thought to have been made between the late Goryeo and early Joseon periods.
