Go Dae-seop House, Ganghwa
강화 고대섭 가옥 · 江華 高大燮 家屋
Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a 99-kan traditional Korean house (hanok) — kan being the traditional unit for counting the bays between pillars — into which Japanese-style architectural elements have been introduced. It is a square ('ㅁ'-shaped) banga, an upper-class house of the kind built by the yangban gentry, with doors set into the front and both side walls on three sides. It is enclosed by a wall of sagoseok, dressed square stone blocks, and its main gate is a single-bay sosseul gate, whose centre section is raised higher than those on either side. Centred on the anchae (main quarters), there is an entrance leading into the central courtyard (jungjeong) through the open space between the sarangchae (men's quarters) and the haengnangchae (servants' quarters). In addition, double eaves are used above the pillars of the low loft (banru), and a tea room is placed at the end of the haengnangchae, both showing Japanese-style structural features. Particularly distinctive is the corridor layout inside the building, which keeps the spaces used by men and by women separate.
