Hoengseong Sindae-ri Three-story Stone Pagoda
횡성신대리삼층석탑 · 橫城新垈里三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pagoda stands in the middle of a field on a hillside at the entrance to Bongboksa Temple. According to local residents, this site is said to have originally been the location of Bongboksa Temple, suggesting that the surrounding field was once the site of an old Goryeo-period temple. The pagoda consists of a two-tiered base supporting the whole weight of the structure, topped with a three-storey body. On the lower tier of the base, pillar shapes are carved at the centre and corners of each side, while on the upper tier they appear only at the corners; the body stones of each storey follow the same pattern. Each roof stone has five-tiered eaves supports on its underside; the gently sloping roof surfaces are thin and flat, with almost no upward curve at the four corners. Only a large support stone that once held the finial ornament remains at the top. Judging from the form of the base and roof stones, this pagoda is presumed to be a work of the Goryeo period.
