Bronze Bell of Okcheonsa Temple, Goseong
고성 옥천사 동종 · 固城 玉泉寺 銅鐘

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a bronze bell cast in the Joseon period, 110 cm high with a mouth diameter of 82.5 cm. On the yongnyu, the dragon-shaped loop by which the bell is hung, two dragons sit back to back, appearing about to rise into the sky as they bite a magic jewel. On the upper band of the bell around eighty Sanskrit characters, joined two by two, are carved, while the lower band bears a lotus scroll design. Below the band of Sanskrit characters, four square yugwak (nipple panels) are arranged, each outlined with a scroll pattern; inside each yugwak are nine raised bosses, and between the panels are relief carvings of a Buddha triad. On the upper part of the lower band is an inscription beginning with 'the 41st year of Qianlong', showing that the bell was made in 1776. This bell, which cracked during the Jinju Uprising, was later repaired.
