Samcheok Gyosudang Hall
삼척교수당 · 三陟敎授堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis hall was built by Hong Jun, a civil official of Goryeo, who sensed that Goryeo would soon fall into turmoil; he came down to live in Samcheok and built it in order to teach his students. It was first built in 1388, the fourteenth year of King U of Goryeo, and the present building was rebuilt in recent times. It measures four kan across the front and two kan along the sides, and has a hipped-and-gabled roof (paljak) whose side profile forms the shape of the Chinese character 八 (eight). Entry is possible only through the end kan on either side, while the rest of the building is enclosed by a balustrade. Inside the building is preserved a printing block inscribed with a poem by Yi Saek (pen name Mogeun), who was the teacher's own master.
