Twin Chung Memorial Stele
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This stele was erected to honour the achievements of Je Mal and his nephew Je Hong-rok, who died fighting for the country during the Japanese invasions of Korea. When the war broke out, Je Mal, who was then serving as magistrate of Seongju, raised a righteous army and fought against the Japanese forces, dying in battle together with Je Hong-rok. King Seonjo praised his achievements, posthumously raised him to the post of Minister of War, and ordered this stele to be erected. The stele consists of a body set upright on a square base stone, topped with a capstone carved with dragons. It was erected in 1792, the 16th year of King Jeongjo; the inscription was composed by Seo Yu-rin, the calligraphy done by Yi Byeong-mo, and the title carved by Jo Yun-jeong. It originally stood in the grounds of Seongju Elementary School, but was moved to its present location around 1940 when the school playground was extended. Their graves are located in Dagu-ri, Jinsong-myeon, Changwon-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, and an identical stele stands behind Choksuru Pavilion in Jinju, Gyeongsangnam-do.
