Hyeondeungsa Temple Three-story Stone Pagoda
현등사삼층석탑 · 懸燈寺三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a general-type stone pagoda 3.7 m high, standing on a two-tier platform set upon a raised base stone. The lower platform, like a Buddha's pedestal, is composed of a bottom stone, a middle stone and a top stone. Both the top and bottom stones of the platform are commonly carved with a lotus design and a rectangular panel, while the middle stone bears corner pillars and a central pillar. The face stones of the upper platform likewise have corner pillars and a central pillar, with a rectangular panel carved in relief between them, above which is placed a cover stone shaped like the roof stone that tops a pagoda or stone lantern. The finial consists of three tiers of supports above the roof stone of the third storey, and of a single stone carved as an inverted-bowl ornament, a beaded band, a wheel ornament and a jewel finial. The distinguishing features of the Hyeondeungsa pagoda are its platform, shaped like a pedestal or altar base, and its roof-stone-shaped cover stone marking off the upper platform. Overall the pagoda gives an impression of stability, and features such as its unusually shaped platform and the gentle eave curves of its roof stones reflect, in every part, the style of the late Goryeo period. However, a reliquary found inside the pagoda bears an incised record of the pagoda's renovation in 'the sixth year of Chenghua', the 15th year of King Sejo (1470), which suggests that the pagoda may in fact have been built at the time of Master Hamheo's restoration of the temple in 1411, the 11th year of King Taejong.
