This pavilion was built by Sim Dong-no, founding ancestor of the Samcheok Sim clan, when he gave up his official post and settled here to live and teach his pupils. It was first built in the tenth year of King Gongmin of Goryeo (1361) and rebuilt by Sim Eon-gwang in the 25th year of King Jungjong of Joseon (1530). From childhood Sim Dong-no was skilled in writing; he strove to correct the disorder of the late Goryeo period, but, displeased with the treacherous officials then in power, he sought to retire to his home town. The king tried to dissuade him but in the end allowed it, bestowing on him the name 'Dongno', meaning an old man heading east. The pavilion measures three kan across the front and two kan along the side, and has a hip-and-gable roof whose gable end is shaped like the character '八'. On the three sides other than the front, walls about four cheok high were built, with the remainder left open. Here survives a piece of writing left by Song Si-yeol, who stopped by while being exiled to Deokwon: a phrase reading 'Chohap unsim gyeongjeonsa', meaning roughly 'the grass grows thick, the clouds hang deep, and the path turns and slants away'.
