충주 이상급 신도비 · 忠州 李尙伋 神道碑

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA spirit-path stele records the lifetime achievements of a king or high official and is erected near his tomb; this stele commemorates Chunggang-gong Yi Sang-geup (1571–1637), a civil official of the mid-Joseon period. Yi Sang-geup passed the civil service examination in 1606, the 39th year of King Seonjo, and went on to serve as Assistant Section Chief of the Board of Punishments and as Magistrate of Pyeongan Province. He then gave up office to devote himself to scholarship and to teaching younger students, but after the Restoration of King Injo he again served as Magistrate of Dancheon and as Governor of Yeonan, and as Assistant Minister of War he worked to strengthen military preparedness. When the Manchu invasion broke out in 1636, the 14th year of King Injo, he attended the king at Namhansanseong Fortress, and was killed by enemy soldiers while travelling toward Ganghwado Island. He was later posthumously appointed Minister of Personnel, and in the reign of King Sunjo was given the posthumous title Chunggang-gong.
