Baegilheon Yi Sam (1677-1735) was a military official of the late Joseon period who passed the military service examination in 1705, the 31st year of King Sukjong. Under King Gyeongjong he achieved great merit as Podo-daejang, head of the Podocheong, the Joseon-period police bureau, and in 1725, the first year of King Yeongjo, he served as Eoyeong-daejang, commander of the Eoyeongcheong, the army charged with defending the capital. In 1727, the third year of King Yeongjo, he became Hullyeon-daejang, commander of the Hullyeondogam, the central military command of the late Joseon period, and won merit in suppressing Yi Injwa's Rebellion of 1728, for which he was made a Second-Class Meritorious Subject and enfeoffed as Baron Hameun. General Yi Sam's tomb and portrait shrine stand in Seokjong-ri, Sangwol-myeon, Nonsan, and the relics that have come down include a portrait album, a sword, an iron mace and a crescent-moon blade (eonwoldo). The portrait album contains a figure in military dress and a figure in civil dress, each 134 cm long and 64 cm wide. The sword is 70 cm long and weighs 1.8 kg. The iron mace is 62 cm long and weighs 1.3 kg, consisting of a round iron head fitted onto a handle, with nail-like studs set into the surface of the head. The crescent-moon blade is 191.5 cm long and weighs 2.9 kg, and bears the inscription 'Yonggwang sa-udu-seong' (the dragon's light shines upon the Ox-Head Star, i.e. the Big Dipper).
