Gwisinsa Temple Stupa
귀신사부도 · 歸信寺浮屠

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA stupa symbolises a monk's grave, a structure enshrining his remains or sari (relics). Standing amid the paddies at the entrance to Cheongdo-ri village, this stupa's original owner is unknown, but it is a relic suggesting that, in the heyday of Gwisinsa Temple, the temple grounds extended even to this spot. All of its members are based on an octagonal form, made up of a pedestal, a body section and a finial. The tall, pillar-like central pedestal stone supports an upper pedestal stone encircled with layered lotus petals. Above this sit the body stone of the stupa and a roof stone whose eight corners curve sharply upward, and at the very top rests a round, ball-shaped finial. Overall the proportions of the individual parts do not match well, giving it an unsteady appearance, and the carved decoration is relatively plain; it is presumed to have been erected in the Goryeo period.
