Cheongpung Local Confucian School, Jecheon
제천 청풍향교 · 堤川 淸風鄕校

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a local state educational institution that enshrined and held memorial rites for the tablets of eminent Confucian scholars while also educating and edifying the local people. It is said to have been first built during the reign of King Chungsuk of Goryeo (r. 1313–1330, 1332–1339). Originally located in Multae-ri, it was moved to Gyo-ri in 1779, the third year of King Jeongjo of Joseon, and was later relocated again to its present site because of the construction of the Chungju Dam. It now retains Daeseongjeon, Myeongnyundang, the Dongjae and Seojae (east and west dormitories), and the Naesammun gate, among other structures. The buildings follow the jeonhak-humyo layout, with the educational space at the front and the ritual space at the rear. The educational area centres on Myeongnyundang, the lecture hall where students gathered to study, flanked on either side by Dongjae and Seojae, the students' living quarters. At the rear, Daeseongjeon, which enshrines the tablets of the sages, together with Dongmu and Seomu, forms the ritual space. During the Joseon period the school received land, books and servants from the state and taught students, but after the Gabo Reform of 1894 its educational function ceased, leaving only the function of holding memorial rites.
