Standing Naju Manbong-ri Stone Buddha
나주만봉리석조여래입상 · 羅州萬峰里石造如來立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA single piece of granite was shaped to a pointed top to form a halo (gwangbae) symbolising the light radiating from the Buddha's body, with a standing Buddha image carved in relief upon it. The round face, gently closed eyes, mouth with a faint smile and long, drooping ears give an overall impression of serenity. The robe is worn draped over both shoulders, its U-shaped folds running down to the knees. The right hand is raised to chest height with the palm facing outward and the fingers pointing upward, while the fingers of the left hand point downward. The rounded shoulders, full chest and the curve of the narrow waist show the realistic style characteristic of Unified Silla Buddhist sculpture. This statue is presumed to be a Goryeo-period work that follows the tradition of Unified Silla sculptural style.
